Chapter 4 : Moonlit Secrets

The moon was waxing. Ryan could feel it in his bones—a silver thread tightening, pulling him toward the coming full moon. In three days, he would lose his voice. In three days, the moon would claim its payment.

He stood at his office window, watching the moon rise over the forest. It was a sliver of silver in the darkening sky, but to Ryan it felt like a spotlight. A promise. And a threat.

A knock at the door. "Enter."

Sebastian Stone stepped inside, carrying a stack of scrolls. "The new patrol reports. From the river crossing."

Ryan took them, his fingers already tracing the patterns. "Any problems?"

"Not yet," Sebastian said. He studied Ryan. "You look pale. Even for you."

"The moon," Ryan said simply.

Sebastian nodded, understanding. "The full moon approaches. Will you be able to attend the council?"

Ryan''s throat tightened at the thought. Three days. He had three days to find a way to communicate without speech. "I''ll manage."

"You should tell Alpha," Sebastian said. "He should know."

"He knows about the condition," Ryan said. "He doesn''t need to know how bad it gets."

Sebastian''s expression was unreadable. "He''s the Alpha. He needs to know everything. Especially when it concerns you."

"Why?" Ryan asked, though he knew the answer.

"Because you''re becoming important to him," Sebastian said. "More than an advisor. More than a political tool. He watches you. Protects you. That''s not just politics."

Ryan looked away, back to the moon. "It''s instinct. The Alpha bloodline. He sees something rare, so he wants to possess it."

"Is that all it is?" Sebastian asked quietly.

Ryan didn''t answer. He didn''t know. The kiss in the forest had felt like more than instinct. More than possession. It had felt... real.

But maybe that was just what he wanted to believe.

"Be careful," Sebastian said. "The clans are watching. William Sun and Elena Moon aren''t the only ones who want you gone. They''re just the most obvious."

"I know," Ryan said. He unrolled one of the scrolls, his eyes scanning the information. Patterns emerged immediately. "This is wrong."

Sebastian leaned over his shoulder. "What?"

"The numbers." Ryan''s finger traced a column. "The casualty reports. They''re too low. By at least thirty percent."

"How can you tell?"

"The patterns," Ryan said. "Look at the attack frequency. The vampire tactics. The terrain. Given these factors, the casualties should be higher. Someone''s altering the numbers. Hiding the true cost."

Sebastian''s face went grim. "Another traitor. Or the same one, getting better at covering their tracks."

"Or both," Ryan said. He felt a chill that had nothing to do with his silver wolf blood. "This is sophisticated. This isn''t just altering patrol reports. This is manipulating data over time. Creating a false picture."

"To what end?"

"To make Alpha look weak," Ryan said. "To make it seem like his strategies are failing. To undermine his authority."

Sebastian''s jaw tightened. "We need to tell him."

"Not yet," Ryan said. "We need proof. Solid proof. Not just patterns. Not just suspicions."

"He trusts your patterns," Sebastian said.

"For now," Ryan said. "But if I''m wrong... if I accuse the wrong person..."

He didn''t finish the sentence. They both knew what would happen. Ryan''s credibility would be destroyed. Alpha''s trust would be broken. And the clans would have the excuse they needed to remove him.

"Find the proof," Sebastian said. "I''ll help. But be quick. The full moon is coming. And after that... the council meets again."

He left, closing the door softly behind him.

Ryan stared at the scrolls, the numbers blurring before his eyes. The patterns were clear. The danger was real.

And he had three days to stop it.

**Alpha''s Chambers**

Alpha was working late. Scrolls covered his desk, maps of the kingdom spread out before him. He looked up when Ryan entered, his golden eyes tired but alert.

"Ryan. What is it?"

Ryan placed the altered reports on the desk. "More tampering. The casualty numbers are wrong."

Alpha studied them, his expression darkening. "How wrong?"

"Thirty percent at least," Ryan said. "Maybe more. Someone''s creating a false narrative. Making it look like your strategies are failing."

"Who?"

"I don''t know yet," Ryan said. "But it''s someone with access to all the reports. Someone high up."

Alpha leaned back in his chair, rubbing his eyes. "Sebastian?"

"No," Ryan said immediately. "He brought me the reports. He''s helping me investigate."

"William Sun? Elena Moon?"

"Possibly," Ryan said. "But this feels... bigger. More systematic."

Alpha stood, moving to the window. The moon was higher now, brighter. "The full moon is coming."

Ryan''s throat tightened. "I know."

"Will you be able to speak?" Alpha asked, without turning.

"For a day or two after, it''s difficult," Ryan said carefully. "During... no."

Alpha turned, his golden eyes fixed on Ryan. "Why didn''t you tell me it was this bad?"

"Because it doesn''t matter," Ryan said. "I can still do my job."

"Can you?" Alpha moved closer. "If you can''t speak during council meetings, if you can''t defend yourself against accusations..."

"I''ll find a way," Ryan said. His voice was steady, but inside he was trembling.

Alpha''s hand came up, cupping Ryan''s cheek. "You don''t have to do this alone. You have me."

Ryan leaned into the touch, despite himself. The warmth was intoxicating. "I know."

"Then let me help," Alpha said. His thumb traced Ryan''s lower lip. "Let me protect you."

"You are protecting me," Ryan said. "From the clans. From the traitor."

"Not enough," Alpha said. His voice was rough. "My wolf... it wants more. It wants to mark you. To claim you. To make sure everyone knows you''re under my protection."

Ryan''s breath caught. "Is that what you want? Or just your wolf?"

Alpha''s eyes darkened. "What''s the difference? My wolf is me. I am my wolf. We want the same thing."

He leaned in, his lips brushing Ryan''s. "You. We want you."

Ryan''s hands came up, gripping Alpha''s arms. "Even broken? Even defective?"

"You''re not broken," Alpha growled. "You''re rare. You''re powerful. You''re mine."

He kissed him again, deeper this time. More possessive. Ryan opened for him, a low growl vibrating in his chest. His wolf approved. Wanted this. Needed this.

Alpha''s hands slid down Ryan''s back, pulling him closer. Ryan could feel the hard strength of Alpha''s body, the heat that seemed to burn through his cold skin. He could feel Alpha''s wolf, just beneath the surface. A raging fire.

They broke apart, both breathing hard. Alpha''s eyes were pure gold now, his wolf close to the surface. "Stay with me tonight."

Ryan shook his head. "The clans will talk."

"Let them talk," Alpha said. "I don''t care."

"I do," Ryan said. "I need to earn my place. Not just be your... your..."

"Mate," Alpha finished for him. "Say it. My mate."

Ryan''s heart pounded. "Not yet."

"Soon," Alpha promised. He kissed Ryan again, softer this time. "Soon."

He stepped back, putting distance between them. "Find the traitor. Find the proof. And then... we''ll talk about what comes next."

Ryan nodded, his lips still tingling from the kiss. "I will."

He turned to leave, but Alpha''s voice stopped him.

"Ryan."

He looked back.

"Be careful," Alpha said. His golden eyes were serious. "The moon is almost full. Your weakness is coming. And our enemies know it."

"I know," Ryan said.

And he did. The moon was coming. And with it, danger.

**The Library, Late Night**

Ryan was searching through old records when he found it. A ledger, hidden behind other books. A record of payments. From an unknown source. To someone in the castle.

His fingers traced the entries. The amounts were large. The dates corresponded with the vampire attacks. The altered reports.

He flipped to the last page. The most recent entry was from two days ago. A payment for "information delivered."

And next to it, a signature.

Ryan''s blood ran cold.

He knew that handwriting. He''d seen it before. On official documents. On council decrees.

It was Sebastian Stone''s.

No. It couldn''t be. Sebastian had helped him. Had brought him the reports. Had warned him about the clans.

But the evidence was there. In black and white. Sebastian was the traitor. Or at least, one of them.

Ryan closed the ledger, his hands trembling. He had to tell Alpha. But if he was wrong... if the ledger was a plant, a frame-up...

He needed more proof. Solid proof.

He slipped the ledger into his robe, hiding it. Then he left the library, his mind racing.

Sebastian. The solid, dependable Stone clan leader. The one wolf Ryan had started to trust.

Was it all an act? Was the help just a way to get closer? To learn what Ryan knew?

Ryan''s wolf stirred, a low growl of warning. *Danger.*

He knew. He could feel it. The trap was closing.

And the full moon was only two days away.

**The Next Morning**

Ryan found Sebastian in the training grounds, watching the young wolves spar.

"Sebastian. We need to talk."

Sebastian turned, his expression neutral. "Ryan. What is it?"

"In private," Ryan said.

Sebastian nodded, leading Ryan to a quiet corner of the courtyard. "What''s wrong?"

Ryan took a deep breath. Then he showed Sebastian the ledger. "I found this. In the library."

Sebastian''s eyes scanned the pages. His expression didn''t change. "Where did you get this?"

"Hidden behind other books," Ryan said. "In a section few people use."

Sebastian''s fingers traced the signature. His own signature. "This is a forgery."

"How can you be sure?" Ryan asked.

"Because I didn''t write it," Sebastian said. His voice was calm, but Ryan could see the tension in his shoulders. "Look at the stroke on the ''S''. I always curve it more. This is straight. Someone is trying to frame me."

Ryan studied the signature. He remembered Sebastian''s handwriting from the reports. The curve was different. Sebastian was right.

"Who would do this?" Ryan asked.

"Someone who wants to divide us," Sebastian said. "Someone who knows I''m helping you. Someone who wants to remove both of us."

William Sun. Elena Moon. Or someone else. Someone smarter. More careful.

"Destroy it," Sebastian said. "Before someone else finds it."

Ryan shook his head. "It''s evidence. Of the frame-up, if not the treason."

"Then hide it well," Sebastian said. His eyes were serious. "And be careful, Ryan. Very careful. Our enemy is closer than we think."

Ryan nodded, tucking the ledger back into his robe. "I will."

He turned to leave, but Sebastian''s hand on his arm stopped him.

"One more thing," Sebastian said. "The full moon. Tomorrow night. Where will you be?"

"In my rooms," Ryan said. "Locked away."

"Good," Sebastian said. "Stay there. Don''t come out. No matter what you hear. No matter what happens."

Ryan''s throat tightened. "Why? What''s going to happen?"

"I don''t know," Sebastian said. "But I have a feeling. A bad feeling. The moon is coming. And with it, trouble."

He released Ryan''s arm. "Be safe, Ryan. And trust no one. Not even me."

Then he was gone, leaving Ryan standing alone in the courtyard, the hidden ledger heavy in his robe, and the moon hanging in the sky like a silver warning.

Two days. He had two days until the full moon.

And he had a feeling Sebastian was right.

Trouble was coming.

The full moon arrives, and Ryan loses his voice as predicted. Trapped in his rooms, he must communicate through written notes and gestures while Alpha becomes increasingly protective and possessive. Meanwhile, the political tensions reach a boiling point, and an "accident" is staged during a night patrol—an attempt on Ryan''s life that forces Alpha to take drastic action. The attraction between them intensifies in the silent, moonlit intimacy of Ryan''s vulnerability.
